Watch your step on Saturday, October 12 from 10am to 4pm, as Artpace presents its street-level gallery of chalk masterpieces at our 10th Annual Chalk It Up festival. Historic Houston Street will experience a colorful awakening and quickly become the “chalk” of the town, with original murals created by some of the most vibrant contemporary artists in San Antonio. The community is encouraged to contribute to a Freestyle area and help complete a city block-sized mural, and a variety of hands-on educational activities are offered in our Kidzones—inviting spaces where imaginations soar. There will also be food, music, friends, and fun for the whole family!
This annual event is an opportunity for locals and tourists alike to appreciate and participate in our city’s creative resources.
Chalk It Up is a free, family-friendly event that promotes the importance of art education and proudly exhibits San Antonio’s creative vivacity by providing hands-on activities led by professional art educators, as well as interactions with contemporary artists. Artpace remains passionate about giving people an opportunity to explore their relationship with not only contemporary art, but their hometown community. Chalk It Up 2013 is made possible by presenting sponsor Argo Group.
This year, we will invite an expected audience of more than 20,000 participants to Chalk It Up. Expose your brand to individuals of all ages at this free family-friendly event. Our Showcase and Feature artists are always selected locally—they’re some of the city’s best, and play a prominent role in the success and enjoyment of Chalk It Up, creating compelling, original murals on Houston Street sidewalks. It’s always interesting to see how our Chalk It Up artists’ varying practices translate into chalk work. You don’t want to miss these professionals at play!
MEET SOME OF OUR ARTISTS
Team Works artists also play a significant role in the event by creating original designs in chalk, rendered directly on a sidewalk “canvas” along Houston Street. Team Works artists can be educators, students, and members of cultural and community organizations.
The Team Works Registration Form is available online. Details and contact information are included on the document. The registration deadline is 5pm on Friday, September 13, 2013. (You will receive notice of your acceptance as a Team Works team by Wednesday, September 18.)
Aspiring artists of all ages are invited to participate in the creation of a super-sized street mural, led by the San Antonio Museum of Art. This collaboration with friends and neighbors is just waiting for your creative input!
Our Kidzone Creation Stations feature imaginative hands-on art activities led by Artpace’s Associate Educators. Kids and teens can use a giant drawing machine, screenprint bandanas, and more—then take their works home to show off!
This free, family-friendly event is made possible by community support—by YOUR support—so please consider being a part of this year’s production of Chalk It Up. Volunteer opportunities are available.
